House Darry

Fire & Blood

House Darry was a Riverlands house whose support for Rhaenyra Targaryen placed it among the forces opposing House Bracken and, later, in the path of Aemond Targaryen’s attacks. The destruction of Castle Darry marked the opening of Aemond’s campaign of devastation across the region and cost the house its lord and heir.

Allegiance in the Dance

After Rhaenyra’s claim was contested, House Darry was among the Riverlands houses that declared for her. Its allegiance aligned it with a broader coalition that included the Mootons of Maidenpool, the Pipers of Pinkmaiden Castle, the Rootes of Harroway, the Mallisters of Seagard, and the Vances of Wayfarer’s Rest. The riverlords did not all choose the same side: the Vances of Atranta declared for Aegon, while Riverrun initially held back amid the dispute between its elderly lord, Grover Tully, and his grandson Elmo.

Campaign against House Bracken

House Darry’s forces joined those of the Rootes, Pipers, and Freys in the host led by Daemon Targaryen that captured Stone Hedge while much of House Bracken’s strength was away. The seizure followed the Battle of the Burning Mill, in which the Blackwoods and Brackens suffered heavy losses. With Stone Hedge taken and members of House Bracken held captive, Ser Raylon Rivers yielded rather than risk harm to them. The defeat broke House Bracken’s resistance, and the remaining supporters of Aegon in the Riverlands laid down their swords.

Aemond’s assault on Castle Darry

The reprieve did not last. After leaving Harrenhal, Aemond Targaryen was free to range across the Riverlands on Vhagar. House Darry was the first to suffer his attacks. As the harvesters fled or were caught in the spreading fires, Castle Darry was consumed in a firestorm. Lady Darry and her younger children survived by sheltering in vaults beneath the keep; her husband, the lord of the house, and their heir died on the battlements with forty of their sworn swords and bowmen.

Loss and significance

The account gives no later recovery or succession for House Darry. It instead sets the house’s earlier military alignment against the final, concentrated cost of Aemond’s campaign: the burning of its seat and the deaths of its lord and heir. Castle Darry’s fall begins the sequence of places laid waste by Vhagar, making the house’s fate an early measure of how quickly the conflict in the Riverlands escalated from competing allegiances and local battles to devastation on a regional scale.
